Special Master in social media case eDiscovery
With parties unable to resolve several highly complex discovery disputes involving hundreds of systems and petabytes of data, Daniel Garrie was appointed to serve as Special Master in a landmark case.
Daniel Garrie was appointed Special Master in In re: Facebook, Inc. Consumer Privacy User Profile Litigation, a high-profile social media case involving hundreds of systems and petabytes of data. Garrie, a Neutral at JAMS, was also appointed to serve as mediator in the case.
The In re: Facebook, Inc. Consumer Privacy User Profile Litigation class action lawsuit was filed against Facebook’s owner, Meta Platforms, for sharing users’ personal data with third parties without their consent. The case was originally prompted by news in March 2018 that the data mining firm Cambridge Analytica had harvested information from up to 87 million Facebook users without their knowledge or consent.
On behalf of the courts, Garrie resolved dozens of disputes involving privilege logs, search terms, technology assisted review, and many other complex discovery issues that involved hundreds of systems, millions of documents, and petabytes of data.
Daniel published several decisions and was instrumental in assisting the parties and the courts resolve their discovery disputes, as well as the dispute underpinning the litigation itself.
