Law & Forensics Senior Director J-Michael Roberts Marks More Than a Decade as Creator of VirusShare, the Cybersecurity Community's Premier Malware Repository

Invitation-only platform has served security researchers, incident responders, and forensic analysts worldwide since 2011; cited more than 60 times in academic literature

NEW YORK — Law & Forensics LLC today highlights the ongoing contributions of Senior Director J-Michael Roberts as the creator and maintainer of VirusShare, the cybersecurity community's widely recognized malware sample repository. Roberts launched VirusShare in 2011 and has operated the platform continuously for more than 13 years, providing security researchers, incident responders, and forensic analysts with controlled access to live malicious code samples to support research and investigations. VirusShare operates as an invitation-only repository, requiring prospective users to submit access requests subject to review, a model Roberts designed to ensure the platform's resources remain in responsible hands. Samples are distributed in password-protected archives, and the platform prohibits automated scraping or excessive bulk downloads. VirusShare is one of several tools Roberts has developed for the digital forensics and incident response community. In 2012 he released the Black Harrier Linux Distribution, a portable live operating system built for digital forensics and cyber-incident response work. Additional tools include CleanSlate (2014) and the Network Equipment and Support Tools (N.E.S.T.) suite (2015). (Source)

Roberts joined Law & Forensics as Senior Director and head of its New York office, bringing more than a decade of experience in digital forensics, incident response, and malware reverse engineering, including a prior tenure as Vice President at Stroz Friedberg, an Aon company. He holds the Certified Computer Examiner (CCE) credential from the International Society of Forensic Computer Examiners and the GIAC Reverse-Engineering Malware (GREM) certification from the SANS Institute. " J-Michael's long stewardship of VirusShare is a tangible contribution to the entire security community," said Daniel Garrie, Co-Founder of Law & Forensics. "The fact that researchers and practitioners worldwide rely on the repository he built — and continue to cite it in their work — speaks directly to his expertise and his commitment to advancing the field."

At Law & Forensics, Roberts has provided expert testimony in multiple federal proceedings, including United States v. Klyushin (Case No. 1:21-cr-10104-PBS, D. Mass.), a high-profile international hacking and insider trading matter, and Atalian US New England, LLC v. Navarro et al. (Case No. 1:20-cv-00133-JJM-LDA, D.R.I.), where his analysis supported findings of willful destruction and forgery of digital evidence. He has also served as an expert in matters before international arbitration tribunals and in proceedings before the Federal Trade Commission. (Source)
